The Shard, the Mac and Museum of Innocence make shortlist

Renzo Piano’s Shard and Witherford Watson Mann’s Astley Castle have been nominated for the Design Museum’s Designs of the Year.

The pair feature as part of a 17-strong architecture shortlist that also includes David Kohn’s Room for London, Zaha Hadid’s Galaxy Soho building and Studio Egret West’s Clapham Library.

Altogether more than 90 designs have been nominated for the annual awards, with categories spanning architecture, digital, fashion, furniture, graphics, product and transport.

Dixon Jones’ Exhibition Road scheme is shortlisted in the transport sector, while Hadid’s Liquid Glacial Table was nominated in the furniture category. Heatherwick Studio’s Olympic Cauldron is also shortlisted in the product category.

The exhibition featuring all the nominations will open March 20, 2013 with the winners from each category and one overall winner to be announced in April.

Last year the award was won by design studio BarberOsgerby for the London 2012 Olympic Torch.

  • Very pleased to see La Tour Bois-Le-Pretre by Druot, Lacaton and Vassal on the list. A very relevant and important approach - and a smart way of dealing with tower blocks and slabs rather than reach for the wrecking ball.

  • Wonderful for the guys at Hall McKnight for the MAC, but am extra delighted for the nomination for the Museum of Innocence. Such a wonderful book and am intrigued by the design.

  • Btw, who runs, organises or sponsers this? And exactly where is the exhibit that is mentioned in the text? I would have thought there was standard details that should have been put in the article.
