The Mayor of New York has unveiled plans to build the world’s largest Ferris wheel on Staten Island’s waterfront.

The 190m-high wheel will have 36 capsules and is being designed by New York practice Perkins Eastman Architects working as part of a team called Starneth.

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said: “The New York Wheel will be an attraction unlike any other in New York City – even unlike any other on the planet. It will offer unparalleled and breathtaking views, and is sure to become one of the premier attractions in New York City and the latest exciting addition to our newly revitalized waterfront.”

The attraction is expected to carry 4.5 million visitors per year and forms part of a wider complex that includes designer outlet shops and a 200-room hotel.

London Eye architect Marks Barfield is not involved in the project.

Just because it's a ferris wheel, does BD really need to point that out?

does every commercial project need to end with the sentence "forms part of a wider complex that includes designer outlet shops and a 200-room hotel"? Sigh.
