The Mackintosh end of year show focuses on designs for an artists studio and residential retreat on the Isle of Bute

The central concept was a task called the Arthouse Project, a brief to design an artists studio and residential retreat on the Isle of Bute, within the grounds of the Mount Stuart Estate.

It was a multi-faceted project with its aims being to design for the creation of art, design a building for a sensitive landscape and use environmental and renewable energy sources.

Notable prize winners this year include Orla Kennelly and Keith Mullen, both from Ireland, who received the awards:

- Glasgow Institute of Architects (GIA) 1st commendation for first year design achievements.

- (GIA) 1st commendation for second year design achievements.

- Awarded the Thomas and Margaret Roddan Trust Scholarship for the academic year 2010/2011

Eliot Foy from Blackpool was also awarded the Glasgow Institute of Architects Commendation for Stage One Portfolio in 2009.

Heather MacSween's scheme seems pretty familiar (ie identical)? I can only assume this might have been a master-planning exercise where this sort of thing may have been acceptable?

  • I think the Karo building is just context to her intervention behind. Look at her other work on the photostream.

  • Hi Graeme, the library shown in my montage is indeed the Open Air Library by KARO Arkitekten in Magdeburg.

The image is taken from a short 6 week Stage 4 project focusing on the interaction between meaningful urban public space and housing in a currently derelict site in Govan.
As such, the collage is a pre-amble to a group master-planning scheme for the site and takes elements from several very successful projects in order to provoke discussion about the importance of community centred interventions in public space and the future of housing in Govan.

It is a shame that you could not have seen the image in the full context of the project at the Degree Show.
    Heather

  • I cannot fathom why these appallingly poor images have been used to represent the Stage 5 projects, many of which were genuinely interesting....

  • I agree with Bob. This doesn’t represent the school or the individuals well at all. Here is my website with the preferred images from my project.
