This year a very challenging brief was set for BA3.

They had to contend with an inner city context for the first time, but not just any city; only Liverpool could offer a site that condenses its unique essence into a few blocks. The city area studied, right on the Strand and within the Liverpool World Heritage Site, bridges the gap between the historic mercantile town and the modern Liverpool One development.

Students first produced a masterplan for the area then designed two separate buildings adjacent to each other on one site. The building in semester 1 was the Liverpool Photographic Gallery with associated public space and the brief for semester 2 was either a Luxury Condo Hotel or Live/Work Artists Studio Apartments.

The briefs were written to allow students to take a unique view on gallery display and living. This unique view was then teased out into an architectural idea which was then driven through to the smallest detail of the project.
