Sally Storey of Lighting Design International on the ESPA Life spa
Traditionally, hotels were frightened that low-energy lighting would create a flat and lifeless colour when dimmed.
At the ESPA Life spa at the Corinthia Hotel in London we achieved a softer effect by reflecting light off warm-coloured surfaces and by concealing most of the lighting.
LED strip lighting was perfect for this as it’s much smaller and so is far easier to hide in locations such as behind banquettes or under benches to give a soft light that is reflected off surfaces. One of the most important experiences in a spa is the transition from reception to the treatment room and here we used LED concealed in slots to wash light over the walls and create a very soft ambience.
Our aim was to provide an element of calmness and tranquility. In the swimming pool, we used fibre optics set into the bottom of the pool to give ripples of light on the swimming pool surface and ceiling above.
In the relaxation room, where people recline in sleep pods around a flickering fire after their treatments, we used small LED downlights shining on to crystal beads. Apart from the flames, that’s the only lighting.
