In the week that we review Zaha Hadid’s latest project in Montpellier, we take a look back at this photo of the AA’s Diploma Unit 9 (taught by Hadid) at the 1983 Projects Review.

Standing behind a collection of the unit’s models, wearing his trademark bow tie, is Gordon Pask, the leading cybernetician. Talking, to his left, are Thomas Croft (of Thomas Croft Architects) and Alastair Standing (of Standing Architecture). Croft is in a Hawaiian shirt, while Standing says: “I only recognise the shoes and that I never got my hair cut at this time.”
They are standing in front of Standing’s final thesis project, a sleep therapy facility for Fulham made up of half boat, half buildings — a model of one sits on the mantelpiece.
After graduating, Standing was employed by Hadid, working on projects such as the KMR Art and Media Centre.
