First scheme in shopping district is reconstruction of famous post-war office building
Allies & Morrison has revealed images of its first scheme in the Netherlands. Situated opposite Rotterdam’s Stadhuis, the 26,000sq m project for MAB Development involves the reconstruction of one of Rotterdam’s best known post-war office buildings, Generale. It will also see the creation of a new flagship retail unit, marking the northern end of Coolsingel, the city’s shopping spine; and the addition of a new luxury residential development, adjacent to the historic Luxor Theatre.
The project is a work of urban repair and regeneration focused on Stadhuisplein, one of Rotterdam’s main civic spaces, which is lined with cafés and restaurants.
A new building adjacent to Generale completes the urban block, forming a balanced composition of old and new, and a dynamic interlock of the three main functions.
A thread of similar details and articulation is carried through the various elements in order to tie them together including fine metal detailing. The retained building will be refaced with Travertine marble, while the new elements will be clad with a family of pre-cast stones in subtly different colours. The new residential element is designed as a pavilion amongst gardens on the roof, clad in a sinusoidal metal reminiscent of hung curtains.
Work is due to commence this autumn.
