Reported comments on the Shell Centre proposals (News April 12) tend to confirm that Cabe is, in its diminished form, incapable of speaking with authority on urban design matters.

I believe we should thank Cabe for the contribution it has made to raising awareness of the importance of good design and close the curtains on this now-discredited organisation.

If the Shell scheme ever comes before the secretary of state, Cabe’s comments will be used to support a scheme that offers nothing of architectural excellence and would be truly destructive of London’s cultural heritage.
