Scheme will see 450 homes built at former Victorian industrial estate in south-east London

Studio Egret West has been appointed architect and masterplanner on a £175 million scheme to turn an industrial estate in south-east London into new homes and workspace.

Developer U&I confirmed that it and Galliard Homes will carry out work for developer Royal London at the Westminster Industrial Estate in Charlton.

U&I flagged up the news in its interim results last month but has today confirmed Studio Egret West will design around 450 homes, new workspace units along with new public space and landscaped areas.

The site will include new build and restoring old buildings

The 2.4ha site is part of the Charlton Riverside opportunity area designated by the Royal Borough of Greenwich and the GLA.

This covers just over 100ha and is being marketed as an opportunity to create a new neighbourhood on the Thames frontage potentially providing up to 5,000 new homes complete with an enhanced Thames Barrier Park and revamped river front.

Work will include new build and restoring old buildings – the site dates back to the 1870s – and the developers have promised to build new homes that “meet local and economic needs”.
