Over 85% of people surveyed said they agreed with the approach to redeveloping the Southbank Centre (News May 3) because the question asked is: “Our architectural approach is to retain, repair and refurbish the existing 1960s buildings whilst making better use of the indoor and outdoor spaces. Do you agree with this approach?”

Design Study of Southbank Centre Festival Wing - day shot

I agree with the approach — I just don’t think the current proposal achieves the stated aims.

Who could object?

The Festival Hall exhibition (News May 3) didn’t have enough information to work out how the proposed alterations worked, how big the new additions were or what purposes they might serve.

There were no plans and no sections, and the aerial views employed the full repertoire of silly distractions including pathetic tension-structure umbrellas.

Who wouldn’t of course agree with retaining, repairing and refurbishing the buildings while making better use of indoor and outdoor spaces? Could the governors now commission a scheme that does exactly that, please?
