The pricing of software is quite ridiculous (News January 11).
The last firm I was at used AutoCAD LT because it couldn’t afford a licence for the full thing. My boss calculated that a licence for 3DS Max on three machines would have been as much as a full-time member of staff.
I looked into going solo but the only software I can feasibly afford is the Adobe Creative Suite, because Adobe offers packages on subscription for about £50 a month.

Bring your own
Personal licensing over corporate would shift the prices lower. Chefs buy their own knives as a precondition of employment, why not architects?
It would stop the CV stuffing whereby knowing that a package exists seems to be enough to convince some that they can list it as a skill. There is no better evidence of commitment to one’s own development than owning your own means of production.
