Two towers will hold 60 criminal courts
Serie Architects has won a competition to design a new courts complex in Singapore.
The proposals include two towers linked by a series of footbridges. One tower is dedicated to the 60 criminal courtrooms while the other will house the judges’ chambers and supporting functions.
An existing octagon courts building will be refurbished and will house the civil, family and juvenile courts.
Serie’s bid was designed local firm Multiply Architects and the competition jury was headed by Israeli-born architect Moshe Safdie. In a joint statement, the judges praised the “simple but dignified” design which “complements the conserved octagon without trying to outshine it”.
The complex has a construction budget of $350 million, with work set to start next year and finish in 2019.
