RSHP, Fosters, Zaha, Amanda Levete and Thomas Heatherwick among 2018 runners and riders
British practices have played a role in the design of around one quarter of the 62 buildings in the running for RIBA’s 2018 Building of the Year, the longlist for the biennial award has revealed.
RSHP gets two bites at the cherry – with 8 Chifly Square scheme in Sydney and BBVA Bancomer Tower in Mexico City, as does John McAslan & Partners – with its Kericho Cathedral in Kenya and Msheireb Museums in Qatar.
Elsewhere, Foster & Partners’ Xiao Jing Wan University Shenzhen, China; Zaha Hadid Architects’ Salerno Maritime Terminal; AL_A’s MAAT museum in Lisbon; and Heatherwick Studio’s Zeitz Muesum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town also figure on the list.
RIBA said the 2018 longlist entries spanned 28 countries and were exemplars of “design excellence, architectural ambition and delivering meaningful social impact”.
President Ben Derbyshire said the longlist shone a light on the world’s best new buildings and most impressive architectural talent.
“Most importantly, this significant selection of 62 projects illustrates the meaningful impact and transformative quality that well-designed buildings can have on communities, wherever they are in the world,” he said.
The International Prize is run in conjunction with Union Internationale des Architectes. The winner will be picked by a grand jury chaired by Elizabeth Diller, of Diller Scofidio & Renfro, and announced in December next year.
