A team featuring Adjaye Associates has triumphed over a rival group including Heathwerwick Studio in a design competition to deliver a new business and residential district south-east of the centre of Paris.

David Adjaye’s practice is part of the Nouvel R team, which last month won the Imagining Bruneseau contest, tasked with proposing ways to deliver 95,000 sq m of new space – the majority of it residential – on a site next to the Boulevard Périphérique ring-road at Irvy sur Seine.

Nouvel R features Hardel Le Bihan, Youssef Tohmé Architects and Buzzo Spinelli Architecture in addition to Adjaye Associates. It won the final-stage run-off with Heatherwick’s IP Factory team, which also featured HEMAArchitectes, DVVD. (See box below for full details of the shortlisted teams.)

A statement from the office of Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo said the winning designs for the Bruneseau district would “extend and affirm” the skyline of the neighbouring 13th Arrondissement.

AG Real Estate France, which is part of the Nouvel R team, said the planned district would breathe new life into the area – with space for start-ups, art galleries, craftsmen and “many shops”, delivered via the kind of street patterns found in the city centre.

It added that the project was targeting a carbon footprint of one-fifth of the Paris average.
