Moira Gemmill and Malcolm Reading are absolutely correct (News March 15). It’s not that there should be fewer competitions — there should be many more.

Two-stage open design competitions, where client contact occurs at the second stage and there is a fee/honorarium for the shortlisted practices — how any architect could object is beyond me.

If they could be run by a visibly competent organiser, so much the better. The RIBA Competitions Office is excellent at running two-stage competitions, as are Malcolm Reading Consultants in the UK and Phase Eins in Germany.
