LOM Architecture & Design has created an annual travel bursary in memory staff member Karla Roman, who was hit and killed by a coach as she cycled to work last year.

The £2,000 fund – similar in principle to the travel bursary offered by Foster & Partners via RIBA – is available to architecture students who are seeking financial support for travel in connection with their studies.

LOM director Richard Hutchison said Brazilian national Roman was “a highly creative architect, a beautiful young woman and a very warm person” who had rapidly become a key member of the practice’s team and had begun a promising career.

She had worked at the Shoreditch-based practice for just under two years and was studying to complete her UK qualifications when she died in February last year. She was 32.

Last month coach driver Barry Northcott, of Bromley, was handed a 15-month jail sentence for causing death by dangerous driving in relation to the fatal collision.

LOM said it had set up the bursary in conjunction with Roman’s family and that it specifically targeted UK residents studying architecture and architecture-related courses as UK-registered institutions.

Applicants are asked to make a 500- to 1,000-word submission describing their circumstances and why their studies would benefit from the travel bursary, including a description of where and when they propose to travel and an approximate budget.

The practice said requests should include a reference letter from a tutor or other relevant referee and a CV. The 2019 bursary is open for applications until December 31 this year.

Roman worked on 13 projects during her time at LOM, notably the Point Blank Music School in Hackney; a private house in Maresfield Gardens, Hampstead; the Queen Elizabeth Foundation for Disabled People, a brain injury rehabilitation centre in Surrey; and a community school in Ghana.
