Cafe ODE in Devon recognised by the Sustainable Restaurant Association
A Devon cafe designed by Exeter-based LHC Architecture has been named the most sustainable restaurant in the UK.
Cafe ODE in Shaldon was recognised by the Sustainable Restaurant Association. The cafe opened six months ago serving locally sourced seafood.
The single-storey cafe seats 120. It was built using locally quarried stone and features large windows to maximise natural light and heat absorption. A grass roof was designed to attract wildlife.
Architect Andrew Aust said the seating was positioned to take maximum advantage of natural light. He added: “All of the design elements aspire to energy saving and efficiency in terms of techniques, materials and good wholesome design.”
The Sustainable Restaurant Association ranks more than 400 food outlets across the UK ranging from Michelin-starred restaurants to fish and chip shops. Cafe ODE was given an overall sustainability score of 94%.
