You said the proposed height increase at South Bank Tower by KPF could be a world first (News July 12), but I know of at least one building, the Blue Cross HQ in Chicago, that nearly doubled the height of its existing building about seven years ago — from 33 storeys to 57.
The architect of the original building, completed in 1997, was Lohan Associates, which became Goettsch & Partners. James Goettsch designed the height increase of 24 storeys, which was achieved between 2007-2010. To look at it now one would hardly notice the join. I hope the South Bank Tower height increase receives approval as it definitely improves the look of the tower, without appearing disjointed and out of place.
