Grimshaw has unveiled dramatic new images of a £2.5 million temporary enclosure for the Cutty Sark in Greenwich, east London.

The ETFE structure is designed to protect the ship from further decay while the Cutty Sark Trust awaits a decision from the Heritage Lottery Fund on £11 million in new money to build a permanent support structure for the ship.

The temporary structure, which is supported by air-filled columns of ETFE, will allow vital conservation work to take place. It is designed to be lightweight, easy to erect and transparent so the ship is still visible to the public during the work.

A decision is expected on the grant early next year.
