I was interested to read Owen Hatherley on public libraries (BD June 14)
Another of the threatened libraries is Jesmond, in Newcastle upon Tyne, which is relatively unusual in being a grade II listed building opened in 1963.
Designed by Henry Faulkner Brown, it was described by Pevsner as “typical of the best of its date” and has become a much-loved local facility. Yet ironically it was proposed for closure as part of a series of budget cuts, in the same year that it celebrated the 50th anniversary of its opening.
The building closed as a council-run facility at the end of June, but negotiations are well underway for it to reopen in August or September as a volunteer-run library and community hub, led by the Friends of Jesmond Library.
Anyone interested in finding out more, or helping in any way to ensure the future of this delightful building, is welcome to contact us at friendsofjesmondlibrary@mail.com or visit www.facebook.com/JesmondLibrary
