Glenn Howells Architects has won the competition to design the £8 million visitors centre for the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas, Staffordshire
The 61ha site, created in 1997, serves as a memorial for soldiers who died serving their country, with 160 memorials and 50,000 trees in their honour.
Howells’ scheme includes an exhibition space and education centre, with a public square and pavilion structure for the 300,000 annual visitors.
“The idea is to create a series of pavilions connected by a colonnade, creating a terrific courtyard space from which you then enter into the arboretum,” said Howells.
