Tennis club to consider roof over No 1 court and more indoor courts
Grimshaw has been appointed to draw up a masterplan by the All England Tennis Club for future redevelopment work at Wimbledon.
All England Club chairman Philip Brook is behind the Wimbledon 2020 plans which is looking at future redevelopment of the grounds in the coming years.
Under an earlier plan, work included putting a roof over the Centre Court and opening a new number 3 Court which has now been completed.
Now future plans under Wimbledon 2020 could include putting a roof over another show court, number 1 Court, and increasing the number of indoor courts from five to six.
“Consideration of a roof for number 1 Court has to be part of our thinking, it would be remiss not to consider that,” Brook said. “It would give a second court for broadcasting live tennis, a second group of happy customers and more certainty about completing the tournament if you get bad weather in the second week.”
