Practices join TP Bennett to assist on Thames-side hotel redevelopment
Design Research Studio and EPR Architects have been appointed alongside TP Bennett to oversee the redevelopment of Sea Containers House on the South Bank.
Morgans Hotel Group secured planning permission last year for the redevelopment, which will see the building open as a 360-bedroom hotel in early 2014.
Plans include the refurbishment of the existing building and the construction of an eight-storey extension on the south side of the site to accommodate the hotel and office space.
TP Bennett is designing the masterplan and the office element of the scheme. Design Research Studio, led by Tom Dixon, is designing the hotel interior with support from EPR.
Design Research Studio said the concept would be informed by designs for 1920s cruise liners. The main lobby will feature a copper-clad wall inspired by the hull of a ship.
A network of brass work will run through the hotel, edging each bedroom door and used to decorate a cocktail bar.
The 1,500sq m ground floor includes two riverside restaurants and a breakfast bar. A roof-top bar will be designed with references to an art deco period ballroom.
Built in the 1970s, the 14-storey Sea Containers House was designed by American architect Warren Platner.
