It is no secret that Spain has a long and brilliant tradition in ceramics, pioneering new techniques for centuries. Although today's industry has its origin in this noble artisan tradition, it has evolved in the last 30 years to be a high-tech leader competing successfully in the world markets. 19% of total world-trade of ceramic tiles are from Spanish exports, and the industry accounts for 0.39 % of Spain's total GDP.

The Association of Ceramic Tile Manufacturers of Spain (ASCER) represents 175 member companies, many of which invest heavily into research and development to produce new and innovative tiles. Spanish manufacturers directly employ 17,700 people who in 2009 produced 325 million square metres of tiles, exporting around €1,673 million.

Key players within the Spanish tile market such as Porcelanosa, TAU Ceramica and Pamesa are all based in the province of Castelln, the hub of tile manufacture on the Iberian peninsula where 98% of Spain's tile production takes place. These stalwarts of the industry exhibit alongside other well known names in the tile industry such as Roca, Grespania and Saloniat various tile trade shows around the world including the key exhibitions CEVISAMA (Valencia 8-11 February 2011) and Cersaie (Bologna 28 September- 2 October 2010) where new and forward thinking collections are introduced.

To give an insight into the huge range of ceramic tile products, the Spanish Ceramic Tile Manufacturers Association (ASCER) compiled 'Ceramic Tiles-a cornucopia of design choice', a presentation which has been accredited by the RIBA as an approved CPD experience.
