Cabe has showered praise on Haworth Tompkins’ designs for the £28 million Everyman Theatre redevelopment in Liverpool.
Detailed plans for the project, which is expected to start on site next spring, were submitted to Liverpool Council at the end of May.
Congratulating the design team on its clear presentation, Cabe’s design review panel said the red-brick building had the potential to be an exemplar is all aspects of its design.
“We welcome the sensitivity demonstrated in maintaining the character and spirit of the much loved Everyman façade, auditorium and bistro in the new building, while making significant technical improvements,” it said.
“This difficult balance has been achieved in this project with ease and grace… This building promises to make Liverpool proud and we wish the project well.”
The proposals include a 400 seat auditorium, community, rehearsal and office spaces and a café, bar and bistro.
The practice is due to develop a scheme for another Liverpool theatrical institution, the Playhouse, after completion of the new Everyman.
