LKAB Minerals launches a new laitance-free floor screed it claims can cut labour and material costs by 66%*

Gypsol Zero Laitance is an anhydrite-based screed formulated to avoid laitance – the layer of fine milky particles that can form on the surface of concrete or anhydrite screed.

This is a boon because laitance usually needs to be sanded off before a finish is applied. If standard anhydrite-based screeds are not sanded, it can cause issues with the floor later. The idea is that Gypsol Zero Laitance will remove the need for this sanding stage.

In addition to these labour cost savings, LKAB Minerals says the product is effective at a thickness of only 15mm, which means less product is needed per square metre. Plus, even if it is applied at a greater depth, of say 50mm, it can dry in just 14 days, reducing time to project completion.

The efficiency gains from Gypsol Zero Laitance are supplemented by sustainability benefits: data shows Gypsol screeds carry 88% less embodied carbon than cementitious alternatives. Furthermore, according to LKAB, their high thermal conductivity makes them particularly compatible with underfloor heating.

This is the latest addition to the range of Gypsol anhydrite-binder based screeds, which includes products specially formulated for a whole range of situations including timber-framed construction, thermal conductivity, rapid drying and extra strength. It is manufactured in Runcorn, Cheshire.

*The 66 percent saving figure is calculated based on using Gypsol Zero Laitace on a 50mm thick, 100m2 floor instead of a normal screed that requires sanding to remove laitance.
