A host of top architecture practices including Zaha Hadid Architects, Serie and Mecanoo have been shortlisted to design the Expo 2017 in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Coop Himmelblau, UN Studio, HOK, Snohetta and J Mayer H are also on the 45-strong list, which seeks proposals for the exhibition centred on the theme ‘Future Energy’.

Nursultan Nazarbayev, the president of Kazakhstan, said: “The theme of our exhibition is closely related to “green economy”, which takes into account the possibility of using alternative energy sources and the autonomous water and heat provision in each of the constructions.”

Following the exhibition the buildings will be used for housing, offices, commercial and research laboratories.

The designs are being considered by a jury, which includes Jeremy Rifkin, president of the Foundation for Economic Trends, USA, and a winner will be announced in September.
