Arup Associates is carrying out a feasibility study into expanding Venice Marco Polo Airport in Italy.

The team has linked up with Arup’s Milan office — which is leading on the project — with Marcus Lee and James Finestone, who both worked on the Heathrow T5 project when the pair were at Richard Rogers, heading the scheme for Arup Associates.

As well as design studies, the feasibility work will include people movement as well as transport links.

The airport is the fifth largest in Italy by numbers and last year carried more than 6.7 million passengers.

Lee said the airport operator, Italian firm SAVE which is partially owned by local authorities, wants extra space because a terminal opened eight years ago is already close to capacity. “It’s almost a mini masterplan,” he added.

As part of the study, officials from SAVE will visit London’s T5, and Lee said its study will be wrapped up by early next year.
