Farrells was working with RTKL on a rival scheme for Hammerson before the developer went into partnership with Westfield and the pair chose to proceed with the Allies & Morrison design.

Both schemes were submitted for planning approval last year. Westfield and Hammerson said they now hope to secure permission in June before working with Allies & Morrison and Leonard Design on detailed proposals.

The project involves redeveloping the 1960s Whitgift Centre and linking it with the nearby Centrale shopping centre.

Westfield is managing the design and construction of the project while Hammerson will take on management of the scheme upon completion.
