Belgian artist Wim Delvoye has invited Ai Weiwei to recreate his Shanghai studio in Belgium.

Delvoye told the Art Newspaper that Ai’s studio, which was demolished by Chinese authorities this year, could be rebuilt as part of a sculpture park planned for his house outside Ghent.

According to Delvoye, Ai kept all the pieces of his studio. “He was planning to do an installation with them, but [rebuilding the studio] would be a very mythological work and also a very autobiographical one,” he said.

Earlier this year, Ai was held for two months by Chinese authorities for tax evasion.
