Andrew Boff says converting it is waste of money

A leading London politician has said the 2012 Olympic Stadium should be knocked down and rebuilt for football.

Andrew Boff, leader of the Conservatives at the Greater London Authority, said spending up to £200 million on converting it into a new home for football with an athletics track would be a waste of money.

“It’s not attractive to football teams because of the athletics track,” he told BD.

“We should stop burdening the new tenant with this requirement. Demolish the stadium and put in place something attractive to a Premier League team.”

A bid from West Ham United is the frontrunner to take over the stadium but last week London Legacy Development Corporation chief executive Dennis Hone admitted the current stadium, including track, wouldn’t be ready to host football until 2016.

Boff said a rebuilt stadium could be marketed as a football-only venue which would draw in other bidders from the Premier League.
