Last year’s headline project for Callison was designing the first Bloomingdale’s outside the US. Bloomingdale’s Dubai was the perfect move for an all-American firm wanting to build on its success as the designer of Tommy Hilfiger’s flagship store on Fifth Avenue and yet diversify beyond recession-hit America.

The Middle East has been a promising market for the Seattle-based firm, as has China, where it opened a new office last year, in a joint venture with Haya, a Beijing-based design firm.

Last year the practice also completed new shops in Dubai for retailers Cole Haan and the Landmark Home Centre; Yueda 889, a mixed-use lifestyle centre in Shanghai; and two shopping centres in China.
