Architect shows off ‘urban cabin’ extensions at London Design Festival
A collaboration between Sam Jacob and a design offshoot of carmaker Mini has been unveiled at this year’s London Design Festival.
The FAT Architecture founding director – now principal of Sam Jacob Studio – added two extensions to a 15sq m “urban cabin” micro house, created by Mini Living Studio which is on display at London’s South Bank
One is a 3.5sq m library, designed to tell the story of London through a selection of books, the other is the structure’s kitchen.
Jacob, who earlier this year revealed proposals for a hair salon-cum-art gallery in south-east London, said he had hoped to create a space where knowledge was shared in a city where the proportion of adults visiting libraries has fallen by one-third over the last decade.
“This library shares stories about London to stimulate discussion about how we might live and what kind of city we want to build,” he said.
“I hoped, with the micro-library, to reignite this age-old ritual of borrowing and exchanging.”
The urban cabin can be seen – and its library used – at the Oxo Tower Wharf Courtyard until September 24.
