KSS has submitted a masterplan for the £1bn regeneration of Purfleet in Essex.

The proposal are for the creation of a new town centre with retail and leisure facilities, an upgraded station, a medical centre, new educational institutions and a million square feet of film and TV studios, the first complex of its kind in the UK in 50 years.

It will also contain around 2,800 new homes and open up the river walkway.

John Rowles, chair of the Purfleet Community Forum & Design Panel, said they had spent 18 months consulting with adults and young people to help “design a town out of a very tired village that was all but forgotten”.

He added: “This planning application is the start of making Purfleet a place where people will want to come and will want to stay to make it their home.”

The plans, for Purfleet Centre Regeneration Ltd, have gone in to Thurrock council. The first homes could be completed in 2020.

Partners for the project include Swan Housing, Urban Catalyst and Quatermaster Studios.
