Practice eyes autumn start for 317-home regeneration area scheme
Work is set to start on Herzog & de Meuron’s first project in Sweden – a 317-home apartment building modelled on the proportions of the 1930s gasholder that it will replace.
The developer of Gasklockan, in the city’s Norra Djurgårdsstaden – Stockholm Royal Seaport – regeneration area, said construction of the 90-metre tall scheme was planned to start by the end of the year for completion by 2022.
Herzog & de Meuron’s block will be the same height as the round sheet-metal building Gasklocka 4, which supplied Stockhom with energy for decades.
Founding partner Jacques Herzog said that as well as being the practice’s first Swedish foray, the building’s shape – created from producing v-shaped arms – was also a first.
“Its floorplan opens like the pages in a book to the surrounding city and landscape, maximizing sun exposure and offering a variety of views,” he said. “It offers a spatial experience not normally experienced when living in a tower.”
The Gasklockan building will sit alongside two brick gasholders that date from 1912 and 1932, and which will be retained on site.
Apartments in the block are priced from 4,550,000 SEK – £391,000 at current exchange rates.
Stockholm Royal Seaport is 3km east of the city centre and is earmarked to deliver 12,000 homes.
