Housing association appoints practice for 330-home third phase of estate redevelopment

CF Møller has been picked to deliver the 330 home next phase of redevelopment for east London’s Robin Hood Gardens estate.

Swan Housing Association said the Danish practice had beaten four other shortlisted practices vying for the scheme’s so-called third phase, which is actually the fourth lot of work to replace Alison and Peter Smithson’s lauded 1972 housing scheme in Poplar.

The affordable housing provider has named the redevelopment Blackwall Reach and is targeting the delivery of 1,500 new homes on the site over the next decad

Møller joins phase 2 architects Metropolitan Workshop and Haworth Tompkins on the scheme, as well as phase 1B practice Karakusevic Carson and 1A firm Frank Reynolds Associates.

Swan, which is redeveloping the site in conjunction with the Greater London Authority and Tower Hamlets council, said Møller’s approach had “shone out” on the basis of its excellent design ideas and focus on “inside out design” that put residents’ interests first.

Executive director for regeneration and development Geoff Pearce said Møller, which is working with Swan on the redevelopment of the Laindon Shopping Centre near Basildon in Essex, had been passionate about ensuring its buildings delivered “human scale street scenes” and links into the landscape to offset the impact of the “busy external environment” close to the Blackwall Tunnel.

“As a regeneration team, we felt strongly the CF Møller team would bring a fresh and positive approach to the next phase of Blackwall Reach,” he said.

Møller associate partner Rolf Nielsen said the appointment was a “unique commission” for a “challenging” location. He added: “We are looking forward to delivering an exceptional quality of architecture for the local community.

Swan said Møller’s Blackwall Reach proposals would also include commercial space but did not specify how much.
