Competition also featured MVRDV and UNStudio

CF Moller has beaten MVRDV, UNStudio and Carmody Groarke in an international competition for a new station and surrounding development in Hamburg.

Thirteen practices were invited to enter the contest, most from Germany. Fellow Danes Schmidt Hammer Lassen were also on the list. Three were shortlisted, including local firm GMP and Austria’s Baumschlager Eberle.

The winning scheme in the city’s northern Altona district contains two towers containing a hotel and offices rising from the landscaped roof of the station.

The roof provides a canopy for outdoor functions such as farmers’ markets and events. This public realm in turn connects the station to the surrounding streets.

Mads Mandrup Hansen, partner at CF Moller Architects, said: “We are really proud that our design has been selected. The project will be a beacon in the future development of the Diebsteich quarter.

“Our vision is to connect the station, city quarter, hotel and office building with a distinctive green profile, which reflects the green focus of the city of Hamburg.”
