The long awaited completion of the Castleford regeneration project was marked by the opening of McDowell & Benedetti’s curving pedestrian bridge last week.

The 131m- long, 3.5m-wide structure boasts four 20m-long curving benches where pedestrians can stop to admire river views, and is the final element of the Yorkshire scheme, which began in 2003 and has been filmed for a Channel 4 series to be shown next month.

Partner Renato Benedetti said: “It was quite an emotional day. We had thousands of people there. [Local MP] Yvette Cooper was there with her children, and as she left she said to me ‘just look at that — people in Castleford are promenading’. There were still hundreds of people at 10 o’clock at night just enjoying being there.”
