AIA launches ten-year sustainability and health programme
Decade of Design will attempt to find solutions to urban issues
The American Institute of Architects has embarked on a 10 year project aimed at developing design solutions for cities to tackle health and sustainability issues.
Decade of Design will also look at cities’ resilience to natural disasters as part of a series of research projects that seek to address the challenges of urban life.
Three strands of work have been identified:
- Funding will be allocated to university research which can demonstrate the importance of design in public health.
- Interdisciplinary university teams will be asked to work with communities and businesses to tackle urban problems using design and technology.
- A ‘Show Us Your APPtitude’ hackathon in which students will be invited to create applications which can help create design or technological solutions to community planning problems.
Texas A&M University, Arkansas University and New Mexico University have all been selected to receive the first one-year grants as part of the initiative.
