Essex man gets culture

23 March 2007

Ash Sakula, Flaqc, Hawkins Brown and Trevor Horne Architects have unveiled these designs for a new cultural quarter in Colchester.

The firms were named in a final shortlist this week by Colchester Borough Council, which selected them from a total of eight developer-backed entries.

The new quarter will sit alongside Rafael Viñoly’s £16.5 million visual arts centre, due to by completed by the end of 2007. The area will include shops, bars, cultural facilities and residential housing which will link Viñoly’s landmark to the town centre.

Howard Davies, project officer for St Botolph’s — the regeneration area that will be home to the cultural quarter — said the quality of submissions was “extremely high”.

Councillor Brian Jarvis, Colchester’s portfolio holder for renaissance, said: “We are now asking people to comment on the schemes and will feed their comments into the competition process. We want to create an area full of life and vitality that really captures the spirit of creativity that is already so strong in the town.”

Winning designs, which should reflect the town’s heritage as well as enhancing its cultural life, will be selected in July.
