Make wins Montenegro hotel competition

10 November, 2009

Make has won a closed competition to masterplan and design a hotel resort on Montenegro’s Adriatic coast.

The firm beat off competition from Foreign Office Architects, MVRDV and Heatherwick Studio in the contest, run by client DC Invest.

The scheme includes a hotel, residential apartments, leisure facilities, restaurants and bars and a treetop walkway on a spectacular cliff top site.

The concept involves three crystalline beacons, sitting 100m above sea level, with panoramic views of the Adriatic coast. A fourth beacon is located in the sea linked by a funicular railway. Between the beacons are clusters of residential buildings.

There will also be a series of sheltered areas, accommodating leisure and spa facilities.

A stream will also link each element, cascading down the hill from an infinity pool and culminating in a rock pool on the beach.

It is hoped that the stream will be incorporated in a sustainable energy system for the resort, providing hydro-power.

Lead architect and partner, Bibiana Zapf said: “This is a dream project for any architect. The location is truly unrivalled and … (client) … DC Invest has a bold and brave vision for the scheme which will capitalise on the country’s burgeoning tourism industry.”

I am amazed at the competition MAKE beat off! I would really like to see the other contestants entries. The visuals are incredibly abstract, I don't think the client will be happy with the building, but I am sure they love the renders. Lets hope its not a repetition of the Nottingham campus...

Well, that should enhance the coast line of Momtenegro !!! Any chance of modest, self effacing architecture anywhere these days ?

Quite! I doubt if Montenegrin development control is up to much, so this is probably the first of many, most of which will be crass. It's a splendid coastline; get there before the deluge.

i live close to this proposed development and gosh its about as in keeping with the surrounding mountains and coastline...well as three huge pyramids could ever be...i also know the very small stream that runs through it that dries up each summer...that is enough hydro electric power to supply a small house...planning issues in montenegro are all about who you know and who you pay..the developer my guess is russian and who knows where the money came from and where some of it will be distributed to get this project started..not impressed!
