Nightingale wins £840m Glasgow hospital project (flythrough)
6 November, 2009
Nightingale Associates has beaten Keppie Architects and BDP to land its largest ever contract in its 20 year history, the £840 million Glasgow Southern General Hospital.
The practice is part of the Brookfield team which saw off rival bids from Laing O’Rourke and Balfour Beatty.
Brookfield and Nightingale have teamed up to land a big hospital job before, and are currently working on the £300 million Peterborough Hospitals PFI scheme.
The new complex in Glasgow covers 28ha and will centralise acute services currently provided by three different hospitals. It will feature 1,100 beds for adults and 240 for children.
Design work is set to start later this month with first phase construction work due to kick off next November. The scheme is due to be fully completed by 2015.

Neil Murphy, principal of the firm’s London studio, said: “Colour and texture will be used to define different areas and functions within the complex. Natural light swill be maximised where possible and attention will be given to providing pleasing views both inside the building and out.”
The work is being funded directly by the Scottish taxpayer rather than through PFI, which is normally used to fund health jobs of this size.
