RIAI 2009 award winners unveiled
23 June, 2009
O'Donnell & Tuomey, BDP, Grafton Architects and Keith Williams Architects and Office of Public Works in Ireland are among the big-name winners at this year's Royal Institute of Architects in Ireland's Irish Architecture Awards.
The prizes were presented by John Gormley, minister for the environment, heritage and local government during at a ceremony on Monday evening at the Cow Shed Theatre in Dublin's Phoenix Park. All the buildings were completed in 2008.
Keith Williams and the OPW won the award for the best cultural building for their lauded Wexford Opera House, which has already won an RIBA Europea 2009 Award, and BD's own 2008 public building of the year award.

O'Donnell & Tuomey won the prize for the best housing for its Timberyard Social Housing scheme for Dublin City Council. BDP won the best retail building category for its Victoria Square scheme in Belfast, which also won a Civic Trust award earlier this year. Grafton won the president's award for its Universita Luigi Bocconi in Milan.
President of the RIAI, Sean Ó Laoire said: "What all of this year’s award winning projects show is that good design is relevant and possible for all building types not just the ‘grand projects’ – this includes smaller projects and once-off housing. By promoting good quality design of our buildings, as well as of our towns and cities, Ireland can position itself as an international standard setter and help attract more high-end investment in the economy."

For the second year there was a Public Choice Award, where the public were invited to vote for their favourite building of 2008 from the RIAI shortlist. The winner was Thomand Park Stadium Redevelopment by Murray O Laoire Architects. Over 5,000 people voted online in the competition.
