The winning team behind phase 1 of the Glasgow School of Art redevelopment has revealed images of its plans.

New York practice Steven Holl Architects led on the design work after winning the job last September, working with Glasgow-based JM Architects and Arup Engineering.

Phase 1 of the plans will see the construction of a new building to replace the Foulis Building and Newbery Tower on Renfrew Street, opposite the existing Mackintosh building.

It will include digital media spaces, a lecture theatre, seminar rooms, exhibition space, a refectory and informal learning areas.

Steven Holl said: “The site opposite the Mackintosh Building calls for a unique, inspiring and stimulating 21st century architecture with a great sensitivity to light, detail, and material.

“The new Glasgow School of Art Building will provide contemplative space for individual creativity and thought, and spaces of collective interaction for students, staff and the Garnethill community.”

The student’s union, housed in the Assembly Building, will also be refurbished.

  • Anybody know where to find the drawings? Steven Holl hasn't published them on his website

  • Very little to see in the two images at this website and very little more in the images at Flickr. Perhaps BD could find a front elevation and better images as to how it integrates visually with the building opposite...

  • Ooooh, too tempting not to comment.

Compare & contract the 2 sections.
Which one seems arbitrary, wilful, over-budget and unnecessary?
    Correct.
I also don't care what the sun is doing at the start of the Spring or Fall Semesters, it is raining in Glasgow for crissakes. And as for the Degree Show, I wouldn't expect this student to graduate.
What is the sun's attitude when i have custard for lunch on Tuesdays?

I suggest y'all look at the elevations. We deserve it.

  • Sectional relationship to Mac building looks interesting. Massing from certain views looks to fit in well considering the programme is far too large to accomodate in anything smaller. Will no doubt be bottomed out into a real building in time. Is it just me or do the watercolours not have the artistic ability of a 3-year-old?

  • Went to visit this at the weekend. The top two storeys of the MacIntosh building are set back and this should have happened on the Holl building in my opinion.
