This awful deal was strongly opposed by the Haringey community groups, as handing council land and properties, which should be used to build desperately needed council housing, to property developers, for projects that will only add to the unaffordable housing pot, with only a smattering of what is called 'affordable' housing -thus causing mass displacement of communities. The Elephant and Castle scheme, a rather sterile and boring clusters of blocks in brick, now ubiquitous across London and its suburbs, has not been people by the original council tenants.
How sad that Labour councils are going hell for leather for these sorts of developments, a form of class cleansing and mass displacement that will see a London only for the higher income bracket, and much of it bought by foreign buyers. Can a true socialist housing programme, as proposed by Jeremy Corbyn's Labour really save the day?
