Here is all the heavyweight money, engineering and architecture you could hope for... and you end up with (your words) unforgivable fecklessness about place making. This is not one little crummy building; it is not one huge crummy building. It is a generation of power-architects and their power-clients, publicly and privately funded, which has built an ethos, an ethic even, absolutely parallel to the boards of privatised public services whose 'duty' is first to their shareholders and last to their hospital patient, rail passenger or water user. These here are shiny and slick, often beautifully made and engineered objects which utterly deny that there is any such thing as society. Surely it is the civic 'planners' and the 'master-planners' responsible for Salford keys who should be forced into the stocks and licked by Prince Charles - or whatever it is that the carbunkle ceremony involves. You may name the wrong people but you have chosen the right place - for it stands for fifty other similarly murdered opportunities for real places around the country. (Been to Hadid's transport museum yet?) Oh and the fact that Prince Charles (for whose archaic tastes I have no truck) might agree with your award, in no way makes it less appropriate.
