Adding to the comments above, it's worth remembering that unpaid or poorly paid labour creates a deflationary pressure on the wages of everybody else in an individual practice, and drives down fees by enabling underbidding, thereby forcing longer hours and lower wages on their competitors. It's a vicious cycle. The savings made are in the end passed on to clients and developers, for the sake of marginally increasing their already substantial profits. Unpaid workers are harmful to the entire architectural profession and the RIBA should not only be making efforts to get rid of this, but also to improve fees and wages for architects across the board, and reduce the unpaid overtime that is accepted as a matter of course.
