The CPD article stresses that BIM is not and never will be about BIM on a single platform from one software supplier, it must be about open BIM standards. BIM products are constantly evolving and professionals anywhere in the construction value system must be free to choose the software which best suits their needs and working practices. As examples you can replace the functionality of Navisworks (costs in the UK £5000+) with a free product from Tekla - BIMsite ( http://www.teklabimsight.com/ ) - an excellent tool for co-ordination. Another product, which exceeds the coordination functionality of Navisworks, is Solibri - again for less money than Navisworks, and in ArchiCAD MEP you can perform coordination and clash detection without another product. So the world of BIM is not just about Autodesk as emphasised by Phil Bernstein of Autodesk when at a conference in the UK last year he talked of the importance of “cross-platform collaboration”. Having a single dominant software publisher for BIM products would be bad for innovation and bad for customers. Graphisoft has constantly shown to be far more innovative as a publisher of BIM software – take a look at their BIM Server which was a direct response to the principal issue being faced by large architectural firms – getting their teams to work efficiently and effectively. My understanding of current general practice in USA is that BIM models are exchanged primarily for the purposes of co-ordination and clash detection rather than as an integrated workflow as would be the case for a seamless Big BIM. The fact that neither the UK nor the USA are very advanced in Big BIM, whereas other parts of the world have good practical experience already, should be worrying to both of us as we also both had car and motorcycle industries not so long ago. BIM technology is a game changer!
