As an architect brought up on the principle that the form of a building should (to a significant extent) follow its function, I have watched the rise of Hadid over the years with bemusement. Along with a number of other superstar and aspiring superstar architects, her work appeals to a world in which a belief in the power of celebrity and a desire for association with its glamour overrides rational good sense. I can only hope that this is a phase that will pass into history and in the post crash recovery we will see a return to appropriate and more enduring values in public architecture.
