Gough says that you would have to: "not [be] blissfully in love with architecture if a little blip like a recession for a couple of years is going to put them off" - yet another reinforcement of the almost total acceptance of the establishment that architecture is, and should continue to be dominated by the middle to upper, monied classes. These people graduated at a time of full maintenance grants, let alone top-up fees and seem to forget that Part Is will generally be leaving studies with over £10K of debt and Part IIs with even more. Piers - wake up!!! Not everyone has the privilege of being able to afford to pop out and buy Paddington Bear jackets and bad haircuts; bills need to be paid - so what, realistically, are the options for these unemployed Part Is and IIs than go and get jobs elsewhere? Sitting around with your buddies sketching, larking around, doing competitions and reimagining our futures, as fun as it is, doesn't put food on the table or heat your house. The majority of successful starchitects and pretenders like Gough were born with a silver spoon in their mouths, and consequently have little understanding or empathy for those from a lower socio-economic strata. It gets grating to hear them bleat on about how "its not that grim". And from a man who really should know the definition of grim....
